How the Elves Crown™ Hydrophilic PTCA Guidewire Is Built
Understanding what's inside the wire explains why it performs the way it does.
The nitinol radiopaque distal core provides kink resistance and shape memory that stainless steel alone cannot match. Where a stainless-steel core may permanently deform in tight bends, the nitinol segment springs back—maintaining tip shape across repeated maneuvers and reducing the risk of wire deformation during complex lesion crossing.
The hallmark of the Super Smooth variant is its hydrophilic coating—a lubricious polymer layer that becomes slippery on contact with blood and saline, dramatically reducing frictional resistance as the PTCA guidewire tracks through the vessel lumen. This is particularly valuable in:
Highly tortuous coronary segments (RCA shepherd's crook, circumflex take-offs, LAD diagonal branches)
Long lesions requiring multiple device exchanges along the same wire
Resistant stenoses where crossing friction would otherwise compromise wire advancement
The coating extends across the distal working segment, where friction matters most, while the proximal shaft retains tactile feedback.
The proximal stainless-steel shaft combined with a PTFE outer coating provides the column strength and anti-friction properties needed for consistent push force delivery. The transition from proximal rigidity to distal flexibility is engineered to prevent abrupt stiffness changes that can cause buckling in tight anatomies.
The distal tip is designed to be manually shapeable—allowing the operator to pre-form a curve prior to insertion—and atraumatic, minimizing the risk of intimal injury or perforation during wire advancement and manipulation.
Intended Use and Clinical Applications
The PTCA guidewire (Super Smooth) is intended to facilitate the placement of balloon dilatation catheters and other interventional devices during PTCA and PTA procedures.
It is primarily used as a coronary guidewire in PCI procedures to:
● Access and cross stenotic coronary lesions
● Provide a stable rail for coronary balloon catheters and coronary stent delivery systems
● Navigate tortuous coronary vessels and side branches
● Support device delivery in complex stenotic lesions and long lesions
In addition to coronary intervention, the super smooth PTCA guidewire can also be considered for selected peripheral transluminal angioplasty (PTA) procedures where a 0.014" guidewire is required, subject to physician judgment and local regulatory indications.
Hainwise offers two variants of the Elves Crown™ PTCA guidewire family. Here's how to match wire selection to clinical scenario:
| Clinical Scenario | Elves Crown™ (Standard) | Elves Crown™ Super Smooth (Hydrophilic) |
|---|---|---|
| Routine, low-tortuosity coronary lesions | First choice — excellent tactile feedback | Suitable |
| Highly tortuous anatomy (RCA, OM branches) | Acceptable | Preferred — lower friction aids tracking |
| Long lesions / multiple device exchanges | Acceptable | Preferred — smooth, consistent re-crossing |
| Tight, resistant stenosis crossing | Acceptable | Preferred — hydrophilic tip eases entry |
| Cases requiring maximum tactile feedback | Preferred — non-coated PTFE provides better feel | Reduced tactile vs. standard |
| Operator preference: smooth, slippery feel | — |

Q: What makes a "hydrophilic" PTCA guidewire different from a standard PTFE-coated wire?
A:A standard PTFE-coated wire provides low friction from a dry lubricious polymer. A hydrophilic PTCA guidewire goes further: the hydrophilic coating absorbs water on contact with physiological fluids, becoming significantly more slippery than PTFE alone. This makes it notably easier to advance through tortuous or resistant lesions—at the cost of slightly reduced tactile feedback compared to non-hydrophilic wires.
Q: Is the Elves Crown™ Super Smooth a workhorse wire or a specialty wire?
A:It is positioned as a workhorse-plus wire—suitable for the broad range of routine PCI cases, with enhanced capability in tortuous anatomy and long lesion cases where the hydrophilic coating provides meaningful performance advantage. It is not a CTO (chronic total occlusion) wire; for high tip-load CTO penetration, Hainwise offers dedicated CTO-class guidewires.
Q: Can the distal tip be re-shaped intraoperatively?
A:Yes. The soft distal tip is designed to be manually shapeable before and during the procedure, allowing the operator to adjust the bend angle as the clinical situation requires. The nitinol distal core provides shape retention after tip forming.
Q: What tip load variants are available?
A:The Elves Crown™ Super Smooth is available in multiple tip load configurations. Contact the Hainwise technical team for current availability and to discuss the appropriate tip load for your target clinical indication.
Q: Does Hainwise offer a 300 cm length for wire exchange techniques?
A:Yes. The 300 cm exchange-length PTCA guidewire is available for procedures requiring balloon catheter exchange without losing coronary position. Contact us for availability in this configuration.
Q: What is the minimum order for OEM/private label production?
A:MOQ varies by configuration and labeling complexity. Contact our business development team directly for a customized quotation and sample shipment request.
